Brixton Cycles Club staged another successful Super Madison meet at Herne Hill Velodrome on Sunday afternoon.
This now annual event is growing in reputation - both in the quality of the field that it is able to attract, plus the spectators that come along for free entry.
With track cycling still experiencing something of a post-London 2012 boom, it was great to find a healthy, yet somewhat relaxed approach to track racing in South London on Sunday.
Whilst the major events over in the East at Stratford ramp up the volume and ticket prices, Herne Hill is still thriving, and still able to hold a race meet largely free of all the corporate sponsorship names.
The main event was Big Rob’s Super Madison Trophy 50 lap Madison points race. This basically involves a pair of riders working in tandem, using slingshot hand changeovers to help propel each other forward.
Other events included individual sprints, endurance and a keirin race. There was a parallel full programme of races for women riders. £1,500 of prize money was on offer throughout the meeting.
In-between the racing the crowd was kept happy with the local Canopy Beer Company tent, as well as jerk chicken from Captain Cliff.
This is an exciting time for Herne Hill Velodrome, with the second stage of the extensive refurbishment having just been granted planning permission from Southwark Council.
The new track surface, the mini track in the well and the outdoor lights will soon be complimented by a second phase of major construction. Planning permission has now been given for a new pavilion on the historic site.
This will include changing rooms, offices and a multi-sports room. It will sit alongside the home straight of the 450m track.
Funding to the value of £1.8m will come from Sport England, the London Marathon Trust and Southwark Council. Building work is expected to start at the end of 2015, and be complete in time for the 125th birthday celebrations of the Velodrome next summer.
But for Sunday afternoon, Herne Hill was all about Brixton Cycles Club carrying on with a strong community presence, and attracting many old and new friends along the way.
Below is a selection of snaps from the meet.
