The 10th Brixton Splash street party on Sunday afternoon was the biggest event yet with thousands of people turning out to party in the glorious South London sun.

Brixton Splash has grown from a very modest affair along Coldharbour Lane back in 2005, to become a celebration of what makes Brixton so brilliant as it takes over the centre of the town.

Four local sound systems all attracted huge crowds. Rebel Soul Sound System along Brixton Station Road greeted anyone entering the area with some soulful Sunday afternoon tunes.

The legendary Studio One opposite the old Blacker Dread stall bought Coldharbour Lane to a standstill by 3pm.

The Natural Dread Sound System also drew in the crowds, whilst the Jah Revelations Sound System opposite the now closed Kaff Bar at least brought some smiles back to the area.

Much of the family entertainment took place around Windrush Square with a Main Stage schedule that included many young Brixton performers.

A busy craft market took place across the road at St Matthews Peace Garden.

What has made Brixton Splash become so special is the DIY approach that many around our town take towards the day of partying.

It was great to see the official sound systems and entertainment. It seemed though that every street corner or spare patch of land sprung up some alternative entertainment or food stall.

The crowds were pretty scary at times, but always manageable given the good nature. If you wanted to be in the centre of the sound system party then Coldharbour Lane was for you. Families could find space over in Windrush Square.

Many, many thanks to the small team of organisers that made the 10th celebration of Brixton Splash so special. It’s quite amazing what such a small body of volunteers can achieve.
