Album of the Day: The Fall - Live At The Witch Trials

There’s so much energy and ideas swirling around here. And all under 30 minutes. Right from the start The Fall didn’t give a fuck. It must have sounded like nothing else in 1979. It still pretty much the case. A glorious mess. Mark was a one.

Buzzed: Third Lambeth Labour Councillor has political ambitions elsewhere as Cabinet member Cllr Jim Dickson looks towards Dartford

“Congratulations to James Rowan Chatterton Dickson who will bothering the doorsteps of Dartford over the next six weeks”

A second consecutive day of running the 10km Estuary Wilds route. There was still dew either side of the estuary path at 7am. It was most peaceful.

Having tested the ground yesterday, I felt more confident in my strides. I wasn’t focussing on potential danger spots along the path.

I’m not sure what happened, but Strava tells me that I was 45 seconds slower than yesterday. Oh well. Another run crossed off.

To Brightlingsea! …mid-morning.

I was in the WivGigs crew for the Maxwell Taylor Cup.

There was a mixed field. It was made up mainly of Harker’s Yard gigs. A few random joker cards were added, including a beautiful six seater Cornish gig. The race was handicapped to allow for the differences.

Our crew assembled, and then took the short ferry ride out to the pontoon to collect Varuna. Another WivGigs crew had rowed her downstream yesterday.

This was quite a technical start. We made sure that we had plenty of time ahead of the jostling on the start line.

A Brightlingsea pigeon shat upon a crew member. That’s good luck, right?

The start of the race coincided with a flotilla of large racing yachts heading in our direction.

Oh dear.

We had a slight oar clash with one of the other gigs as both crews fought to hold their line in the water.

Our race plan was to attack hard for the first five minutes, see where we are, and then settle into our rhythm.

This worked well. We were in the top five, then the top three. The next hour or so was all about maintaining this position, and possibly attacking harder.

My fellow male rower in the boat had a few wardrobe malfunctions. His shorts kept on falling down. It was quite a distraction.

Plenty of rowing mantras were shouted out by various crew members to keep the momentum building. I tend to ignore these and concentrate on staying in time.

A third place finish was fantastic. We were presented with the most amazing trophy.

I didn’t hang around. I had football to watch.

With no horse in the FA Cup Final race, this was a relaxed game to watch. It’s weird when it comes to wanting Man Utd to win.

I had a few tears with Abide With Me. The game passed me by as I switched to some ebay scrolling instead.

Football, kinda bloody hell, etc.

England t20 highlights and more RHS Chelsea viewing saw out Saturday.
