Album of the Day: Destiny’s Child - Survivor

Just not my shit.

It was a rainy day in SW8. You don’t say. This didn’t stop the early morning Lockdown Runner. There she was, jogging back and forth at the back of the flat carrying her umbrella.

GOOD EFFORT Madam in keeping this up since those dark days of Covid.

The early morning feeds delivered a gem from Left Lion. The Nottingham magazine has secured funding to create an online archive for The Pie and the Mighty Brian fanzines.

BACK OF THE NET.

I’ve got most of the back copies up in the loft for both publications. They were pivotal in my own personal education of taking a DIY approach to publishing. Both had important things to say; both weren’t afraid to take the piss out of their own club.

The Left Lion story also mentions the Overall online archive. I had no idea that this existed. If you want to read gig reviews of ropey Midlands indie shite bands from a fresh faced Boy About Town, then clickety click.

It was a school day for me in SW9. I started off with some guided reading. Boy Y was asked to hand out the books. He leapt to the task with an infectious enthusiasm:

“I am the school butler!”

You tell them, Boy Y.

A misunderstanding then followed when the word ‘habitual’ was misheard, leading to Girl Y questioning the language being used.

I was surprised later in the day to learn that many of the sixth form students refuse to have anything to do with Halloween. This is pleasing. Various religious, cultural and personal reasons were offered.

I had some more Mac OS 14 upgrade woes. The settings for dictation appear a little buggy. I increasingly use dictation for my school work. I hope I’m not giving you a peak behind the magical curtain, but dictation and then a clean up with ChatGPT works a treat.

The school day went quicker than I was expecting. A late night last night up in N Ldn took its toll on. My body struggles to cope with nights out on a school day.

I caught the tube up to LS for the journey back to Weird Wiv. This wasn’t a day when I would want to be riding my Brompton around town. I noticed that face masks appear to be on the rise again on the tube.

Welcome to winter 2023.

Back in Weird Wiv and the weekly veg bag was collected. There was a very phallic looking veg that neither A or I could identify. We have called it knob.

The Postman Delivers: Absolute Beginners double CD.

COOL, Daddio!

I thought it was time to reassess the soundtrack almost 40 (!) years since it was first released. I loved it back in 1986, and I still love it now.

The soundtrack was panned even more than the film. I fail to see why: Gill Evans, Working Week, Dammers, Tenpole Tudor, erm, even Smiley Culture. It’s tremendous fun.

The Riots, Romance and Be-bop tagline s bloody awful though.

We played the latest Streets album later in the evening. Skinner can do no wrong in my world.

The new tunes apparently have a narrative running through, similar to A Grand Don’t Come for Free. I couldn’t work out what this was on the first listen. I’m looking forward to the accompanying film.
