Album of the Day: TV on the Radio - Dear Science

This started off sounding very cold, then the soul arrived on track 2. There was even a punk lite edge to some of the songs. It gets a little Coldplay crappy in places, then launches straight into some Chic funk on the next track. I can’t be doing with all the genre bed hopping tbh. Not really my kind of thing.

The Grumbler’s County Cricket substack was sent my way. I wasted no time in signing up. Yes, it’s one hell of a moan. But there’s a lot to moan about on the County circuit these days.

To the Loveless Hall! For the Wiv Memories exhibition!

This is an annual August Bank Holiday event. Who can say no to a pokey village hall stuffed full of musty old smudges?

The theme this year was the Pubs of Wivenhoe. It was wonderfully curated. I felt thirsty after reading the first three information boards. I thought of the Deserter boys.

There was a reference to the Angry Brigade and their brief dalliance with the town. Ah - I didn’t know the short-lived HQ of UK anarchy was once just one street away from here.

Chin chin.

The plan was then for a Bank Holiday BONER bicycle ride out to Grayson Perry’s House for Essex. We bloody love it there - the house, the scenery, the serenity.

But time was a little tight with some work shifts late afternoon. Instead we took the tried and tested 30km route.

I clocked some yoof wearing a bloody Oval Invisibles top in Wiv.

wtaf?

I wanted to stop and ask him about his love of a franchise team that doesn’t really exist. A told me to calm down and keep on cycling.

My own cycling style these days is increasingly looking more suited to a MTB rather than a roadie. I think it’s the laid back style of riding that the Raleigh electrics offers.

I can’t remember the last time I wore cleats. Lycra has been replaced by a pair of MTB shorts and a Crass T-shirt. It all feels very relaxed.

I was fighting flies from hitting my face throughout the circuit. We startled a pack of pheasants that were loitering in a deserted hedgerow.

A invented a new game: Maze or Sweetcorn? The idea is to identify if it’s maze or sweetcorn growing in a field.

It was a shit game, tbh.

An hour long Garibaldi Reds podcast was waiting back at base. It was good to hear a MOTD moan. Zero attention was paid to the Taiwo goal at Old Trafford. I’m not that bothered. I like it when Forest slip under the radar of legacy media.

Monday evening was odd. A pal tipped me off to watch Bargain Hunt. I was more concerned about why the pal was watching Bargain Hunt in the first place.

Christ, that was very, very odd TV. Do people actually watch this shit during the daytime?

The reason for the recommendation was that Herne Hill Velo was featured. To be fair, it was a very decent segment, looking at the proud history of the old track.

But the actual auction action?

Absolute bollocks.

Mosquitos are little shits this time of year, right?
