Florist Footfall

Welcoming a new business to Wivenhoe is always a positive blog post to write. The florist that has recently opened up at Jolef’s Yard just off the High Street is hardly new though. Andy is a Wivenhoe boy born and bred. He traded as a florist some two decades ago in the town, and has now chosen to return his business to Wivenhoe:
“I was a florist here twenty odd years ago. I decided to come back into the village and re-open the shop again, and to hopefully get the customers back. I was born and bred in Wivenhoe. This is my village - I enjoy the trade around here.”
Having re-opened up the shop opposite the Post Office just under a month ago, the feedback so far has been great:
“So far in the village there has been an absolutely brilliant response. We have had people through the doors, even just to say Hi, and to have a look around. I’m very pleased with it so far.”
As soon as you walk in the space just off the High Street you are hit with an aroma of different seasonal flowers. These will change of course over the coming weeks, with Andy keen to stock flowers that will be suitable for occasions such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day etc.
Being located down towards St Mary’s should also hopefully help…
But it’s not just the florist side of the business that Andy is looking to build up at Jolef’s Yard:
“We also have a gift side with various ornaments, crystal wear, incense, candles and room fragrances.”
Footfall is obviously an issue for any trader down towards the bottom of the town. Some businesses survive, sadly some don’t. But as with Andy’s new neighbour, James the Barber, there is no shortage of new ventures with the enthusiasm to give it a try.
In the recording below we touch upon how to improve Wivenhoe as a hyperlocal-trading town. Andy is keen for the car park opposite The Greyhound to be expanded. There is no simple solution, but the more traders centred on the same footfall patch has to be a positive move.
“There’s always a friendly face when you enter this shop. We’ll go out of our way to make sure that you enjoy yourself when you come through the door.”
…that has to help as well.
And so welcome to Andy the Florist to Wivenhoe. He’s never been away really. The business is open Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm, and then 9am - 3pm on Saturdays.
Sweet smell of success hopefully.
