Disappointing news comes our way as Keep Colchester Cycling has learnt that the bicycle lockers at Colchester Town train station are about to be removed. These are highly valued by the local cycling community as a safe place to leave bikes whilst going about the daily business within the town.
Network Rail has given no reason as to why the lockers are now no longer deemed to be necessary. It’s not as though they are taking up valuable space, in what is something of a barren station platform anyway.
There is some hope however, with the Station Manager indicating that the decision may be reversed, should sufficient numbers of Colchester cyclists complain about the planned removal.
A simple email, a phone call to NXEA on 0845 600 7245, or a letter sent to FREEPOST RSCZ-UXZJ-EHHE, National Express East Anglia, Station Approach, Norwich, NR1 1EG, should do the job.
Colchester Town [urgh - ALWAYS St Botolph's to us] isn’t the greatest of areas right now. There is a perceived threat of anti-social behaviour, something which the police have recognised in their recent deployment of services.
Having a secure bike lock up is important in encouraging cycling use in this part of the town as the Cultural Quarter starts to regenerate the area. We strongly believe here at Keep Colchester Cycling that this decision needs to be reversed.
We are noticing that quite a few rail firms have stopped buying cycle lockers. There also seems to be a few second hand ones which are identical to those we supplied to at least 3 rail networks appearing on popular auction websites. I wonder whether for some strange reason an order has come from above.
