A charming obituary for Denis Wirth-Miller, penned by Martin Newell, the pop genius of this parish:

“The things which made them [Denis and Dicky Chopping] legendary in their newly adopted town of Wivenhoe, however, were their hospitality, their kindness and their drunken revels. Never mind that it was now the early 1950s. Never mind that they were a homosexual couple living in what had remained, until the mid-1960s, a rough-hewn Essex ship-building and fishing town. They behaved at times as if it were Paris in the 1890s.”
