On Clough and his Captain

Friday 26th February

Brushing over the Brian Clough Trophy draw, BBC Radio Nottingham broadcast a lovely interview between the Great Man and his Captain who followed him around four clubs. The archive piece between Clough and John McGovern is short, but shows the mutual respect between the Manager and Captain.

BBC Radio Nottingham always get archive value out of BC ahead of Brian Clough Trophy days. He’s the man who had a foot in each camp. I often suspect that his soft spot was to be found at the other end of… Brian Clough Way in the County where he continued to live following his sacking by Derby County.

The interview covers pre-match preparation (stare at a football), freebie tickets and getting Gary Birtles to run his bollocks off through a pile of nettles. Ah - nostalgia, etc.

As for Captain Kermit? I’m still miffed that I missed him opening up the village playing field with a ceremonial kicking of a football back in 1978. We were on a family holiday at the time. It was the talk of the village for following decade. He’s still running City Ground tours - COVID shit allowing, etc. It’s on my Fair City To Do list, whenever I’m allowed to travel back to the Fair City.

Friday night at Pride Park was pah. This isn’t a football tactics analysis blog. Pah probably sums up my feelings right now.
