A new hockey season at Streatham and it's that strange time of the year where the Speedos meets the skates. A lovely afternoon swim at the ﻿<a﻿ ﻿href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080726191905/http://www.onionbagblog.com/pictemps/lido2.html"﻿ ﻿target="_blank"﻿>﻿lido﻿</a>﻿ topping up my tan, and then quicker than you can say '﻿<span﻿ ﻿style="font-style:italic;"﻿>﻿Jumpin' Jack Frost in yer trunks﻿</span>﻿,' it was up to ﻿<span﻿ ﻿style="font-weight:bold;"﻿>﻿SW16﻿</span>﻿ for the winter game.

It's either that or ﻿<span﻿ ﻿style="font-weight:bold;"﻿>﻿Have a Go at a Hoodie﻿</span>﻿ at Streatham Bowling Alley. But the Beautiful Game (﻿<span﻿ ﻿style="font-style:italic;"﻿>﻿football, not Happy Slap a Hoodie﻿</span>﻿) was in evidence at the old ﻿<span﻿ ﻿style="font-weight:bold;"﻿>﻿High Road﻿</span>﻿ rink. I'm not saying that 'minority interest' South London sport is incestuous, but I spotted half a dozen blokes reading the ﻿<a﻿ ﻿href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080726191905/http://www.nonleaguedaily.com/index.php"﻿ ﻿target="_blank"﻿>﻿Non-League Paper﻿</a>﻿. Not bad for a crowd size of seven.

But no, not me; I was happy with the match day programme:

'﻿<span﻿ ﻿style="font-style:italic;"﻿>﻿Would you like to buy the programme, Sir?﻿</span>﻿' I was asked on entry. It wasn't quite an intimidation on par with the Metropolitan Police, but I fear I would have been thrust forward for the first face off if the answer was ﻿<span﻿ ﻿style="font-weight:bold;"﻿>﻿NO﻿</span>﻿.

﻿</br>﻿

And so new season, same old seats. the fragrant ﻿<span﻿ ﻿style="font-weight:bold;"﻿>﻿mrs onionbagblogger﻿</span>﻿ and I sat down our size 16's and 8 (in that order,) only to find that the seats were just one fat person away from ending up in a South London skip.

I advised mrs obb to stand for the evening.

Apologies to any Monarchists (well, not really,) but I'm pleased to report that the National Anthem is no more at Streatham. And thank fuck for that. We had ﻿<span﻿ ﻿style="font-weight:bold;"﻿>﻿Wooly Bully﻿</span>﻿ instead, which given the coldness of the building, coupled with the sales technique of the programme seller, it was probably much more appropriate.

Also fitting was the ﻿<span﻿ ﻿style="font-weight:bold;"﻿>﻿Learn to Skate﻿</span>﻿ sign - put up behind the away net-minder...

Streatham survived a﻿n early power-play before going one down. I was too busy looking at the pair right down below me from my balcony view. Mind the gap, etc, and marks out of two? I'd give her one.

I caught the Streatham equiliser, as well as a right hander from mrs obb. I would have been safer out on the ice.

﻿<br﻿>﻿
﻿</br>﻿

It's not often that mrs obb is put forward as an icon of sporting inspiration, but where she led, the Redskins followed. A half decent fight broke out on the ice and I'd wager it wasn't over some player viewing the eye candy rather than the puck.

﻿</br>﻿

1-1 at the first period break and time for my tea. But all the summer fun of the lovely lido meant that I overlooked my PG Tips duty earlier in the day. Dare I risk the rink cafe? Dare I look at the pair of Bristols down below once again?

﻿</br>﻿

90p for a half cup of cold, grey drain water. And get this - a sign saying: ﻿<span﻿ ﻿style="font-weight:bold;"﻿>﻿NO CHANGE GIVEN﻿</span>﻿. Rip Off Britain or what? I wish that I had bought a programme earlier. At least I wouldn't be twenty notes out of pocket for the privilege of drinking some South London drain water.

Unlike my tea, I was still fuming over the incident when the players took to the ice and Raiders added a second. Just like the cafe, no change there...

Sloppy Streatham defending allowed in a third and the 'Skins were struggling.

﻿</br>﻿

You can't beat a bit of ﻿<a﻿ ﻿href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080726191905/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_Benatar"﻿ ﻿target="_blank"﻿>﻿Pat Benatar﻿</a>﻿ at the break and it didn't look like Streatham were going to beat Romford with only one period remaining. But a spirited fightback from the 'Skins added a second, soon followed by a blue liner to pull the score level.

I was so overjoyed I almost went for a second cup of cold tea. I only would have spilt in though in all the excitement as I celebrated an unlikely fourth goal for Streatham.
