Wivenhoe Moving Image

Much to catch up on with Wivenhoe Moving Image as the new season for the independent community cinema is launched. As well as the films taking us through February, Moira from Moving Image shares in the audioboo below membership details, themed films and the tricky pre-Christmas quiz.

Not quite your average fleapit then.

Memberships for Moving Image run through until December. Which must mean that it’s time to sign up for another twelve months. Ten pounds provides you with a membership card, and then a sizable discount every Saturday night down at the Philip Road Centre.

The prices for the new season remain the same at £4.50 for members. Non-members are made most welcome, paying a little extra at £6 per film. Students and children blag the best bargain at £2.50 for a screening.

Moira mentions the continued success of the themed films, as organised by Sydney Bailey. It’s a Wonderful Life was the predictable success with the 40’s style tea and cake afternoon. The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner at The Legion allowed the members to discuss the film after the showing.

Meanwhile the Moving Image pre-Christmas quiz at the William Loveless Hall [where else?] proved a little tricky for some of the film buffs of Wivenhoe and beyond. Mr Quiz Master is a hard man to please, apparently.

We also touch upon the future of the Moving Image Multiplex, aka the Philip Road Centre. The community coordinated [we hope] Right to Bid momentum for the building seems to be moving in the right direction. Essex County Council has confirmed that the space is available until the end of the summer term. Moving Image continues to work with the other user groups to try and find a long-term sustainable solution for the centre.

As for the films?

Modern day spy thrillers, political dissidents and celebrations of female friendship shaped by the threat of global annihilation and the first stirrings of the 60’s.

Saturday night on ITV1 this most certainly isn’t – and thank the chuffers for that.

All films in the new season are being screened on Saturday evenings in the splendour of the Philip Road Centre, with an 8pm prompt starting time.
