V For Moving Image Venture

05 November 2011 » 1 Comment

Venerous, volitable, vomitive, vivific, um, vacant – yep, it can only be the V for Vendetta screening at Moving Image on Saturday evening at the Philip Road Centre.

This was the first in the November Take Over schedule, where the younger film enthusiasts of Wivenhoe have been invited to schedule, promote and organise the films for the independent community cinema.

Remember, remember the 5th of November – the gunpowder, treason and plot themes of the film also sadly seemed to account for a rather sparse auditorium at Philip Road. It didn’t help that V for Vendetta was showing on BBC2 later in the evening.

Whoops.

But Moving Image is all about the big screen experience in a community setting, as well as the new supped up sound system. If your idea of an ideal Saturday night is to watch Westminster being blown up on the big screen, and with the soundtrack attacking you at all angles, then Moving Image made sense.

Fireworks greeted our arrival at Phillip Road; they also signaled our departure some two hours later. I’m not sure what the going rate is a for a box of rockets down at Tesco nowadays, but I bet it can’t beat the £4.50 value for money for a cinematic experience right on your doorstep.

And so remember, remember – the Moving Image Take Over season continues throughout the remainder of the month. The young folk of Wivenhoe have demonstrated some rather fine taste in films:

Sat 12th Attack the Block

Sun 13th Gnomeo and Juliet

Sat 19th Exit through the Gift Shop

Sat 26th If… and

Sun 27th Back to the Future

If I was twenty-five years younger then I’m afraid my lack of celluloid knowledge would have led to Purple Rain down at the Philip Road Centre from now until the Christmas lights of St Mary’s are turned on.

Now if that don’t turn YOU on…

Voluminous, vocarious, very very good – and that was just the king size saveloy from Papa’s on the way home.

Vigorous I tell you. Vigorous.

Thanks for this, Jason. The young people who have chosen the films for November realised that they were up against it when they saw that their first film was on November 5th, but I’m really glad they picked V for Vendetta. I hadn’t seen it before and thought it was a bit pompous and preposterous but it’s also passionate about protest and weirdly recognisable. And as one of the volunteers said, it was good to see it on the big screen. I have seen next week’s film, Attack the Block, and hope that will get the audience it deserves. It’s a great film.
