Right Old Wivenhoe Royal Wedding

15 April 2011 » No Comments

It may not quite be the Republican celebrations that our Comrades are planning (or not) over in Camden, but events are shaping up for the Royal Wedding weekend in Wivenhoe.

I like to think that there’s something for every taste – as long as the taste includes bitter, stout, shorts etc.

Chin chin.

First up comes news of the Royal Wedding Beer Festival being organised up at Broad Lane by Wivenhoe Town FC. To label it a Republican beer festival isn’t perhaps doing the weekend of events justice.

It’s not so much a wave two Wivenhoe fingers in the air at the happy Establishment couple, but more of a hey – it’s a Bank Holiday: let’s celebrate in any which way we fancy.

For the Friday of the actual blue-blooded nuptials, this includes the Royal Wedding Community Match. You could invent a Wivenhoe quiz based around this theme, asking contestants to order the words in terms of importance:

Community, Match, Wedding, Royal.

I think that the emphasis is very much on community, with a kick off of 11am, just as Wills and his fragrant wife to be are doing the dirty. And then to celebrate the continuation of the Monarchy, the beer festival will toast the happy couple in the bar.

Blimey.

Other events up at Broad Lane over the Royal Wedding weekend include the annual Club Presentation Night on Saturday 30th – the first team, reserves and under 18′s will all be honouring and celebrating the achievements of the season.

A Classic Car Show continues the Bank Holiday weekend theme on Sunday 1st May. All money raised on the day at Broad Lane will be distributed to local charities.

Elsewhere around the town and it seems that Wivenhoe just can’t get enough of celebrating Wills and ‘er indoors the State funded Royal Palace. News comes my way that The Station boozer is having something of a Royal Wedding celebration on the Friday Bank Holiday:

“Join us for a day of Royal Wedding celebrations. We are open from 11am and shall be showing the ceremony. Teatime treats will be served from 3 onwards, feel free to bring something along. The Judith Charmers will be entertaining us from 4.”

The Judith Charmers ROCKED the WivSoc post-Christmas party this year, and are certainly worthy of a trip down to The Station to continue the toasting of everyone’s favourite Establishment couple.

I’ll drink to that.
