Wivenhoe First
Local Wivenhoe households should have hopefully by now received a copy of the wonderful Wivenhoe Business Directory 2011. Actually it’s 2011 – 2012. In these ever changing economic circumstances, I rather like the optimism and belief that the fine traders within will all still be in business in two years from now.
The Directory is an extension of Wivenhoe First, the initiative in the town to help promote the businesses in Wivenhoe to local residents. The basic idea is to look after your own. Job’s a good ‘un.
Jerry Davis at Wivenhoe First writes:
“About two years ago I thought that we needed to revive Wivenhoe First and so I created the Wivenhoe First website. This was with the intention of giving all the businesses in Wivenhoe, no matter how large or small, the opportunity of advertising not only locally, but also globally through the internet.”
Over 100 local businesses now benefit from Wivenhoe First. The Directory aims to accompany the website, and act as an offline resource for local traders.
It’s all with rather apt timing as well. This weekend I have been in need of an electrician and a heating engineer. Bad luck comes in threes; I note that the Wivenhoe Business Directory also lists dentists…
Jerry adds:
“To register for your free webpage, go to wivenhoefirst.co.uk, complete the online form and we will create a page for you. Once completed, you can securely add, edit and update the content.”

Unfortunately the Map in this booklet is totally wrong on two counts within 100 yards of my house!!
Queens Road is shown as a through road, (it isn’t), and the indication is that you can drive from one end of Paget Road to the other.
Unfortunately there is a railway line right through the middle!. Pedestrians can get through two gates, a sometimes muddy path which is sometimes overgrown, and walk across the railway line. The map makes it appear otherwise.
This really is a basic unaceptable error. The railway line has been there longer than we have, (43 years at least), and to promote the local scene so inappropriately defeats the whole object of having a map!
Don’t know about the rest of it, but with two glaring errors the booklet has been dismissed as useless.

Mmm – not sure about useless. The map errors are a shame, but I’ve certainly managed to fix my weekend electricity and heating woes thanks to the Directory.

I think you will find that Queens Rd was a through road until the recent addition of the bollards to prevent access for commercial vehicles using the route to access the business centre etc. The railway line does appear on the map as cutting through Paget Rd.
More the point is that the map is an artistic impression, not ordinance survey.
It was very difficult to get the map right as there has not been an accurate map of the area surveyed for at least four years. Even the recent introduction of the google maps survey gets it wrong.
There will soon be a town sign erected opposite the Greyhound pub featuring an updated version of this map and leaflets advertising local businesses. This has been achieved by a group of local volunteers who give their time to promote Wivenhoe businesses to residents.
I would hope residents and local businesses will benefit from the efforts of the WBA without being unnecessarily harsh or negative of the efforts made. Any constructive comments are welcomed and can be sent to me directly for representation and I encourage people to come to the monthly WBA meetings.
